Break the Rules Day – £1,590 Raised

Today the children of St Brigid’s Primary School enjoyed another fantastic Break the Rules Day, raising an amazing £1,590 in support of Fr Magill’s missionary work in Myanmar. It was a brilliant opportunity for our school community to come together, have some fun, and show generosity towards those whose lives are filled with hardship and challenge.

The day began with our Principal Mr Mullin and Vice‑Principal Miss Boyle swapping their usual roles to take charge of playground and gate duty, greeting all pupils as they arrived to school.

After being treated to a much‑needed cup of tea prepared by our secretary Mrs Scullion, it was straight down to business with an important Zoom call involving Elaine McCrystal from EA School Meals. Very serious matters were discussed, including the rising price of school dinners, whether EA could build us a bigger canteen and why chilli‑based foods appear on the menu when not all children enjoy them!

The busy schedule continued with a phone call to Mrs Russell, Principal of Carhill Integrated Primary School. Mr Mullin and Miss Boyle were keen to learn from her experience and asked some very important questions, including what the hardest part of being a principal is, how she ensures teachers are working hard, and what punishment is given in her school when homework is not completed. Plenty of notes were taken!

Next came the task of counting the fundraising money. Mr Mullin and Miss Boyle couldn’t believe how long it took to sort and bag the generous contributions from our school community. It was then time to make a visit to the local post office, where they made the school lodgements with Jane, a great real‑life learning experience.

At break time, the Principal and Vice‑Principal joined staff in the staff room for tea before heading out on playground inspections. Following positive feedback, the children were rewarded with some extra playtime. All the staff were delighted that their new principal Mr Mullin had treated them to cakes and buns as a reward for their hard work!

The hard work continued as Mr Mullin and Miss Boyle visited each class to judge the wonderfully creative crazy hairstyles. Certificates were carefully chosen and written, tiring but very important work!

Uniforms were ditched, cuddly toys appeared, slippers were worn and many rules were joyfully broken, all in the name of charity.

This truly was a whole‑school effort. Mrs O’Kane and Miss McAlister are absolutely delighted with the success of this fundraiser and would like to sincerely thank all pupils, parents and staff for their incredible generosity and support.

What a fantastic day for a wonderful cause!
